India's Garden City or Silicon Valley? The city of Bangalore, capital of the southern India region of Karnataka, is a city of great contrasts. Once known as a sleepy destination for pensioners with its comfortable climate and multitude of parks, lakes, gardens and tree-lined avenues, today it is a lively cosmopolitan city with a booming economy and a large IT sector. There are plenty of hotels and for visitors looking for luxury hotels Bangalore will not disappoint.
According to legend, the origins of Bangalore lie with King Veeraballa of Vijayanagara who asked a woman in a small hut in a forest for some food. She fed him baked beans, known as Benda Kalu in the local language. The King thought it was the best food he had ever tasted and named the place Benda Kalu Ooru, or place of baked beans.
Good as the baked beans undoubtedly were, the hotel restaurant menus at the city's luxury hotels are likely to be rather more enticing, ranging from local specialties and international dishes to Mediterranean and Oriental style food. The hotel bars offer Indian beers and other local drinks as well as international brands.
Many of the luxury hotels have leisure facilities such as a swimming pool and spa. Guests can pamper themselves with a beauty treatment or treat themselves at the hotel's gift shop. The modern hotels are spacious with plenty of amenities such as a 24-hour reception desk, concierge desk, room service and Wi-Fi internet access. The guest rooms are air conditioned and well appointed, usually with a TV and tea and coffee making facilities and some have a minibar, DVD player or iPod dock.
With business and conference facilities at many of the luxury hotels Bangalore is a popular business destination. Many international IT brands are represented in the city and it is the center of India's growing biotech industry.
For visitors enjoying the comforts of its luxury hotels Bangalore has plenty of attractions. Vidhana Soudha is one of the city's best known landmarks. Bangalore is renowned for its gardens and parks, including the 240-acre Lalbagh Gardens where visitors can see the largest collection in India of rare subtropical and tropical plants. It also includes Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs surrounding a lawn, a topiary park and a lake. The State Library is in Cubbon Park which has many statues and fountains.
